Frank Rinehart Eyerly was born 3 June 1903 to Josiah and Celia (Grandrath) Eyerly in Newton, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa from 1923 to 1927. He joined the staff of the Des Moines Register and Tribune in 1927 and moved through the ranks of reporter, copy editor, telegraph editor, news editor, and assistant managing editor.
